A formal message or report given to a superior in a hierarchical structure, e.g. in the military or a company.

The word 'Rapport' has three very different meanings. The context always makes clear what is meant: military/company (report), psychology/coaching (trust), or design/fashion (pattern).

'der Bericht' and 'der Rapport' can both mean that someone passes on information in a factual way. 'Bericht' is much more general and normal in many different situations. You can write a report or report on something orally. 'Rapport' is clearly more formal and is used mainly in hierarchical structures, for example in the military or in some companies. The words can be confused because a 'Rapport' is a special kind of 'Bericht'. In everyday life, people almost always say 'Bericht'. Use 'Rapport' when you mean an official report to a superior.
