A method in soccer and similar sports for determining a winner in the event of a draw after extra time. Players from both teams take turns shooting at the goal from the penalty spot.

'die Verlängerung' and 'das Elfmeterschießen' both belong to situations in soccer where a winner is still being sought after a draw. 'Verlängerung' (extra time) is additional playing time in which normal soccer continues to be played. 'Elfmeterschießen' (penalty shootout) is no longer playing time, but a series of shots from the penalty spot. Learners may confuse the words because both can happen after regular time. The order is important: often 'Verlängerung' comes first, and after that there may be an 'Elfmeterschießen'.
