'Erstaunt' (amazed) is the past participle of the verb 'erstaunen' (to amaze) and is very often used as an adjective with 'sein' (to be). It describes a state or reaction.

The correct preposition
When the reason for the surprise is mentioned, 'erstaunt' (amazed) is often used with 'über' (about) and the accusative.
