However, 'Zusammenkunft' is much more general: it can be about work, politics, neighbors, friends, or a celebration. 'Familientreffen' is more specific and directly says that members of a family are coming together, often including relatives you do not see often. If you are only saying that people are coming together for a particular purpose, 'Zusammenkunft' fits. If the family connection is important, 'Familientreffen' is more natural and more precise.
