'Fassung' (composure / version / frame) comes from the verb 'fassen' (to grasp / to hold). This basic idea appears in all meanings: to 'hold' your self-control, a 'gefasste' (edited) version of a text, or a holder for an object.

In connection with self-control, there are fixed expressions: 'die Fassung verlieren' (to lose one's composure), 'die Fassung bewahren' (to keep one's composure), and 'um Fassung ringen' (to struggle to maintain one's composure).

When it is about a version, 'Fassung' (version) is often combined with adjectives such as 'neue' (new), 'alte' (old), 'ursprüngliche' (original), 'schriftliche' (written), or 'endgültige' (final).

You can recognize this meaning by the fact that it is always about a physical holder for an object. Typical examples are the frame of glasses, the setting of a gemstone, or the socket of a light bulb.

'der Rahmen' and 'die Fassung' can both mean something that holds or surrounds an object. 'der Rahmen' fits especially with pictures, windows, or doors. It provides support and can also be decorative. 'die Fassung' is more of a holder or setting into which something is inserted, for example with glasses, a ring, or a lamp. Learners may confuse the words because both can be something 'around something'. In practice, however, people say 'Bilderrahmen' (picture frame) and 'Brillenfassung' (glasses frame); these combinations sound the most natural.
Die neue Fassung der Brille ist leichter als die alte.
The new frame of the glasses is lighter than the old one.
