Usage tips
Word structure
The ending '-tion' is a strong clue that the noun is feminine, so it is 'die Edition' (the edition). Many other words in German that come from Latin follow this pattern.
EXAMPLE
Die neue Edition des Romans ist ab nächster Woche erhältlich.
The new edition of the novel will be available starting next week.
Sentence structure
To specify what there is an edition of, German usually uses the genitive or the preposition 'von' with the dative. Both forms are correct and common.
EXAMPLE
Die Edition der Briefe des Künstlers ist sehr teuer.
The edition of the artist's letters is very expensive.
Context clues
The context reveals the meaning: if it is about books or films, a version is meant (m01). Words like 'limitiert' (limited) or 'Sonder-' (special) point to an exclusive product series (m02). A scholarly context points to the process of editing and publication (m03).
EXAMPLE
Diese limitierte Edition der Uhr ist bereits ausverkauft.
This limited edition of the watch is already sold out.
Typical collocations
When it is about a limited series, 'Edition' (edition) is often combined with adjectives such as 'limitiert' (limited), 'nummeriert' (numbered), or 'handsigniert' (hand-signed). Compounds such as 'Sonderedition' (special edition) or 'Sammleredition' (collector's edition) are also common.
EXAMPLE
Der Autor verkaufte eine handsignierte Edition seines Bestsellers.
The author sold a hand-signed edition of his bestseller.

Edition vs Serie
series
'die Serie' and 'die Edition' can both refer to a group of products. 'Serie' is more general and fits when products are manufactured according to the same pattern, often in large numbers. 'Edition' sounds more specific: it is often limited, specially designed, or made for a particular occasion. The words can be confused because people also talk about a 'limitierte Serie' (limited series) or a 'limitierte Edition' (limited edition). If it is only about regular production, 'Serie' is more natural. If the special version is being emphasized, 'Edition' fits better.
Edition
Zum Jubiläum verkauft die Firma eine Edition mit nur 500 Stück.
For the anniversary, the company is selling an edition of only 500 pieces.
Serie
Das Fahrradmodell geht im Herbst in Serie.
The bicycle model will go into series production in the fall.
