Usage tips
Register: Very vulgar
This word is extremely vulgar and is considered very offensive or inappropriate in most social situations. It is not a neutral word for sex and should be handled with great caution.
EXAMPLE
Er wurde aus der Bar geworfen, weil er vulgäre Wörter wie dieses benutzte.
He was thrown out of the bar because he used vulgar words like this one.
Context clue
The meaning changes depending on sentence structure. Without an object or with 'miteinander' (with each other), it means to have sex. With an accusative object ('jemanden ficken' — to fuck someone over), it means to cheat someone or harm them.
EXAMPLE
Er hat das Gefühl, dass sein Geschäftspartner versucht, ihn zu ficken.
He has the feeling that his business partner is trying to fuck him over.
As an insult
In the imperative, 'Fick dich!' (Fuck you!) is used as a direct, very aggressive insult. It expresses extreme anger and rejection toward a person.
EXAMPLE
Nach dem Streit schrie er nur noch „Fick dich!“ und ging.
After the argument, he just shouted 'Fuck you!' and left.

'verdammt' and 'ficken' can both occur in very emotional exclamations when someone is angry or frustrated. 'verdammt' is colloquial and direct, but still less harsh in many everyday situations. 'ficken' is vulgar and very coarse; as an exclamation or in phrases like 'Fick dich!' (Fuck you!), it can come across as strongly insulting. For that reason, the words are not simply interchangeable. If you want to express annoyance, 'verdammt' is usually less hurtful. 'ficken' is something you should understand, but use very carefully or not at all in normal conversations.
