'die Veranstaltung' and 'das Festival' both refer to an organized event that several people take part in. However, 'Veranstaltung' is much more general: it can be a concert, a lecture, a sports day, or a conference. 'Festival' is more specific and usually means a larger cultural event, often lasting several days and focused on a theme, such as music, film, or theater. The words can be confused because every festival is a 'Veranstaltung'. But not every 'Veranstaltung' is a festival.
