'die Finanz' and 'das Finanzamt' can both refer to the tax authority. 'das Finanzamt' is the normal and unambiguous expression in Germany and generally in Standard German. 'die Finanz' is used especially in Austria as a colloquial term for the tax authority. The words can be confused because 'Finanz' also brings money and finances to mind. If you want to speak in a way that is safe and understood everywhere, 'das Finanzamt' is usually the better choice. 'die Finanz' is more suitable in everyday Austrian speech.
