Word family
The verb 'finanzieren' (to finance) belongs to the word family around 'die Finanzen' (finances, plural) and the adjective 'finanziell' (financial). All of these words relate to money and its management.

Sentence structure with dative

'unterstützen' and 'finanzieren' can both have to do with money. However, 'unterstützen' is broader: help can also be practical or material, and money is only one possibility. 'finanzieren' means more specifically that the necessary money for something is provided, or that something is paid for from a particular source of money. Learners may confuse the words when talking about financial help. If the type of help is open, 'unterstützen' fits better; if paying for something is clearly meant, 'finanzieren' is more precise.
