With 'flackern' (to flicker), the light source or the image itself is the subject. The verb takes no accusative object; the cause can be introduced with 'durch' (because of), for example.
Die Lampe flackerte durch einen Wackelkontakt.
The lamp flickered because of a loose connection.
Use 'schwach flackern' (to flicker faintly) to describe the low intensity of a light. 'Kurz flackern' (to flicker briefly), on the other hand, emphasizes the short duration of the disturbance or movement.
Das Feuer flackerte nur noch schwach.
The fire was only flickering faintly now.
Die Deckenlampe flackerte kurz, dann wurde es dunkel.
The ceiling light flickered briefly, then everything went dark.
For films or television images, the expression 'über den Bildschirm flackern' (to flicker across the screen) is common. Here, 'über' (across) takes the accusative; the images being shown are the subject.
Alte Schwarz-Weiß-Bilder flackerten über den Bildschirm.
Old black-and-white images flickered across the screen.
