Usage tips
Alternative spelling
Alongside the spelling 'Focus', the Germanized variant 'Fokus' is very common today and is often preferred. Both spellings are correct and have the same meaning and the same article, 'der'.
EXAMPLE
Der Fokus unserer Arbeit liegt auf der Kundenzufriedenheit.
The focus of our work is on customer satisfaction.
Sentence structure with 'auf'
In the meaning 'Schwerpunkt' (main emphasis), 'Focus' is almost always used with the preposition 'auf'. To describe an action, you use the accusative: 'den Focus auf etwas legen' (to put the focus on something). To describe a state, you use the dative: 'Der Focus liegt auf etwas' (the focus is on something).
EXAMPLE
Legen Sie den Focus auf die wichtigsten Aufgaben.
Put the focus on the most important tasks.
Context clue
The meaning is usually easy to recognize. If it is about topics, attention, or priorities, 'Schwerpunkt' (main emphasis) is meant. In texts about photography, physics, or optics, 'Brennpunkt' (focal point) is meant.

Focus vs Zentrum
center
'das Zentrum' and 'der Focus' can both mean the most important point. 'das Zentrum' can be a real center, for example in a city or on a surface. But it can also figuratively be the most important point of a topic. 'der Focus' mainly refers to the attention or main emphasis of a piece of work, a conversation, or a plan. The words can be confused when something is about importance. 'Im Zentrum stehen' (to be central / to be at the center) sounds more natural when something is at the center of attention. 'Der Focus liegt auf ...' (the focus is on ...) fits better when you want to say what you are concentrating on especially.
Focus
Bei dem Kurs liegt der Focus auf einfachen Gesprächen im Alltag.
In the course, the focus is on simple everyday conversations.
Zentrum
Im Zentrum der Diskussion stand die Frage, wie die Mieten sinken können.
At the center of the discussion was the question of how rents could be lowered.
