A curtain made of light, often transparent fabric that hangs in front of a window. It serves as decoration, provides privacy, and softens the incoming light.
example
Sie zog die Gardinen zu, um sich vor den neugierigen Blicken der Nachbarn zu schützen.
She drew the curtains to protect herself from the neighbors' curious looks.
Usage tips
Common mistake
To open or close curtains, German uses the specific verbs 'aufziehen' (to open/draw open) and 'zuziehen' (to close/draw shut). The general verbs 'öffnen' (to open) and 'schließen' (to close) are normally not used here.
EXAMPLE
Kannst du bitte die Gardinen zuziehen? Die Sonne blendet.
Could you please draw the curtains? The sun is glaring.
Typical verbs
Besides opening and closing them, other typical actions are 'Gardinen aufhängen' (to hang curtains), 'Gardinen abnehmen' (to take curtains down), and 'Gardinen waschen' (to wash curtains).
EXAMPLE
Nach dem Umzug müssen wir noch in allen Zimmern die Gardinen aufhängen.
After moving, we still have to hang the curtains in all the rooms.
Sentence structure and position
The position of a curtain is usually described with the preposition 'vor' (in front of). It hangs 'vor dem Fenster' (in front of the window).
EXAMPLE
Die neuen Gardinen hängen direkt vor dem großen Wohnzimmerfenster.
The new curtains hang directly in front of the large living-room window.

Gardine vs Store
store
'der Store' and 'die Gardine' do not really belong to the same area of meaning in the meanings given here. 'der Store' means a modern shop or a digital platform where you can buy or download something. 'die Gardine' is a light curtain at a window. The words might only be confused because 'Store' sounds unfamiliar as a foreign word. In German, you use 'Store' for apps or modern shops, but 'Gardine' for fabric at a window. The words are not interchangeable in these meanings.
