A small animal belonging to the crustaceans that lives in the sea and is eaten worldwide as a delicacy. Garnelen (shrimp) are also known by names such as shrimps or prawns.

When 'Garnele' (shrimp) refers to a dish or ingredient, the word is almost always used in the plural. You normally order or eat several 'Garnelen' (shrimp).

'Garnele' and 'Krabbe' both refer to crustaceans and also appear in food contexts. Strictly speaking, a 'Garnele' is a small, elongated sea animal. A 'Krabbe' as an animal has a broader body and often moves sideways. What is confusing is that in cooking, especially in 'Krabbenbrötchen' (shrimp roll / crab roll), people often mean shrimp meat. That is why learners can easily confuse the words. If you want to be biologically precise, distinguish 'Garnele' and 'Krabbe' by the animal. In food contexts, 'Krabbe' can also mean shrimp regionally or culinarily.
