'bekannt' and 'gefeiert' can both describe people whom many people know. But 'bekannt' first of all only says that someone is familiar to many people. This can be positive, neutral, or, depending on the context, even negative. 'gefeiert' is stronger and positive: the person is admired and recognized for an achievement. Learners may confuse the words because a celebrated person is usually also well-known. But not every well-known person is automatically celebrated.
