In everyday speech, 'Wahnsinn' often simply means something unbelievable or crazy. 'Die Geisteskrankheit', on the other hand, sounds more medical and refers to a serious mental illness. For real illnesses, 'Geisteskrankheit' is more precise, but the expression can sound harsh or outdated. 'Wahnsinn' fits better when speaking figuratively or very emotionally.
