An area entered and surveyed in an official register (cadastre), usually comprising a municipality or part of one. The term is used mainly in administration and real estate.

Gemeinde is a political and administrative unit with its own administration. Gemarkung, by contrast, is an officially surveyed area recorded in the cadastre; it may comprise an entire municipality or only part of one. Use Gemeinde for the administrative unit and Gemarkung for the surveyed area.
