An area entered and surveyed in an official register (cadastre), usually comprising a municipality or part of one. The term is used mainly in administration and real estate.

'die Gemeinde' and 'die Gemarkung' both refer to a place or an area. 'die Gemeinde' means a political unit, for example a village or town with its own administration. 'die Gemarkung' means a precisely surveyed area in the official cadastre. This word is used mainly for plots of land, maps, and administration. The words can be confused because a cadastral district often belongs to a municipality or has roughly the same name. For people, the town hall, and local politics, use 'Gemeinde'; for property boundaries and official areas, use 'Gemarkung'.
