However, 'Gerechtigkeit' is usually understood as a moral ideal; only in a special sense can it also mean the justice system. 'Gerichtsbarkeit' is a more precise legal term. It means either the jurisdiction of a court or state to administer justice, or the judiciary as a whole. Learners may confuse the words because both sound connected to law and courts. In everyday language, 'Gerechtigkeit' is more common when talking about fairness. 'Gerichtsbarkeit' fits mainly in legal texts and when talking about jurisdiction or areas of legal responsibility.
