Usage tips
Word family
The verb 'gewichten' (to weight) is derived from the noun 'das Gewicht' (weight). When you weight something, figuratively speaking, you give it more or less 'Gewicht' (weight), meaning more or less importance.
EXAMPLE
Bei der Bewertung wird die praktische Erfahrung stärker gewichtet als die theoretischen Kenntnisse.
In the evaluation, practical experience is weighted more heavily than theoretical knowledge.
Sentence structure with 'nach'
To indicate the criterion for the weighting, the preposition 'nach' with the dative is often used. The structure is: something (accusative) nach something (dative) gewichten.
EXAMPLE
Die Ergebnisse der Studie müssen nach Alter und Geschlecht der Befragten gewichtet werden.
The results of the study must be weighted by the age and gender of the respondents.
Typical collocations
'Gewichten' (to weight) is often combined with adverbs that describe the extent of the weighting. Typical examples are 'stark gewichten' (to weight heavily), 'schwach gewichten' (to weight lightly), 'höher gewichten' (to weight more highly), or 'anders gewichten' (to weight differently).
EXAMPLE
In meinem Studium habe ich die praktischen Kurse immer höher gewichtet als die reinen Vorlesungen.
In my studies, I always weighted the practical courses more highly than the purely lecture-based classes.

gewichten vs berücksichtigen
to consider
'berücksichtigen' and 'gewichten' both have to do with how you include information in a decision. 'berücksichtigen' means that a point is considered at all. 'gewichten' goes one step further: you decide how important this point is compared with other points. The words can be confused because when you weight things, you first consider different things. But 'berücksichtigen' does not yet say whether a point is very important or less important. 'gewichten' fits when several criteria are meant to count with different levels of importance.

Für das Projekt gewichten wir die Kosten stärker als das Design.
For the project, we weight the costs more heavily than the design.
