'Einstufen' (to classify) is a separable verb. The prefix 'ein-' goes at the end in a main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.

The word is made up of the prefix 'ein-' and the verb 'stufen', which comes from 'die Stufe' (level, grade). Literally, it therefore means to put something 'in eine Stufe' (into a level).

Zuordnen connects something neutrally with a category or group. Einstufen also assigns something to a category, but places more emphasis on a particular level or evaluation and is often used in official contexts. Use zuordnen for neutral classification and einstufen for an evaluative level.
Die Lehrerin stufte die neuen Schüler nach ihren Sprachkenntnissen in drei Niveaus ein.
