'die Anerkennung' and 'die Gleichstellung' can both occur in official situations, for example with degrees or rights. Here, 'Anerkennung' means that something is officially confirmed as valid. 'Gleichstellung' goes one step in a specific direction: something or someone is formally treated as equivalent to something else. The words can be confused because equivalence often also requires recognition. But 'Anerkennung' does not automatically mean that two things are treated as equivalent. If it is only about confirming validity, 'Anerkennung' fits. If it is about equal legal treatment or equivalence, 'Gleichstellung' fits.
