Graphit vs Kohle

coal

'die Kohle' and 'der Graphit' can be confused because both are dark and connected to carbon. Even so, 'Kohle' normally means a combustible raw material that can be used to generate energy or for heating. 'Graphit' is a soft gray-black mineral and is found in pencil leads, for example. So they are not the same material and do not have the same use. For heating or energy, you say 'Kohle'; for pencils or the mineral, you say 'Graphit'.

Visual example for Kohle
