'Herausstellen' (to turn out / emphasize / put outside) is a separable verb. The prefix 'heraus-' comes at the end of the main clause. In subordinate clauses and in the infinitive with 'zu', the verb stays together.
Er stellt die Pflanzen bei gutem Wetter heraus.
He puts the plants outside when the weather is good.
You can recognize the meaning from the grammar: the reflexive form 'sich herausstellen' means 'to turn out'. The non-reflexive form with an abstract object, e.g. 'Vorteil' (advantage), means 'to emphasize'. The form with a concrete object, e.g. 'Stuhl' (chair), means 'to put outside'.

This reflexive meaning is often used in two patterns. Either with 'als': 'Etwas stellt sich als Adjektiv/Nomen heraus' (something turns out to be adjective/noun). Or with a 'dass' clause: 'Es stellt sich heraus, dass ...' (It turns out that ...).

In the meaning 'to emphasize', 'herausstellen' is used with abstract nouns. Typical objects are: 'die Vorteile' (the advantages), 'die Bedeutung' (the importance), 'die Ergebnisse' (the results), or 'einen Aspekt' (an aspect).
In ihrem Vortrag stellte sie besonders die positiven Ergebnisse der Studie heraus.
In her lecture, she especially emphasized the positive results of the study.

Both verbs can express that something becomes recognizable later. Sich zeigen focuses more on an outcome or property becoming visible. Sich herausstellen places more emphasis on recognizing this only after further information becomes available or as things develop.
