The territory or state ruled by a duke or duchess. The term is used mainly in historical contexts.
Das Herzogtum Braunschweig war bis 1918 ein deutscher Bundesstaat.

The word ends in '-tum'. This ending is attached to nouns that refer to people or titles in order to describe their territory, status, or a collective whole. A 'Herzogtum' (duchy) is therefore the territory of a 'Herzog' (duke).

'das Königreich' and 'das Herzogtum' both refer to a territory or state ruled by a noble person. The difference lies in the ruler: in a kingdom, a king or queen is at the head. A duchy is ruled by a duke or duchess and today usually sounds historical. Learners may confuse the words because both fit with monarchies and old forms of rule. In practice: with a king or queen, you say 'Königreich'; with a duke or duchess, 'Herzogtum'.
