The adjective 'heutig' is derived from the adverb 'heute' (today) by adding the ending '-ig'. This pattern is also found with other adverbs of time and place, e.g. 'gestern' → 'gestrig' (yesterday's) or 'dort' → 'dortig' (local/there).
