idyllisch vs friedlich

peaceful

'friedlich' and 'idyllisch' can both describe a pleasant, calm atmosphere. 'friedlich' mainly says that there is no conflict, violence, or unrest. 'idyllisch' says more: a place or situation is peaceful and at the same time beautiful, harmonious, and often a little picturesque. Learners may confuse the words because 'idyllisch' always has something peaceful about it. But not everything peaceful is idyllic. A quiet hallway can be peaceful, but a small village by the lake is more likely to seem idyllic.
