inszenieren vs Regie

directing / direction

'Regie' and 'inszenieren' both belong to the artistic work involved in a film, play, or opera. The difference is mainly grammatical and a matter of perspective: 'Regie' is a noun and means the direction or the activity of the person responsible. 'inszenieren' is a verb and describes what this person does: they prepare the work for performance and shape it artistically. The words can be confused because they often occur in the same situations. You say 'Regie führen' (to direct) or 'ein Stück inszenieren' (to stage a play).
