Kelte vs Wels

catfish / Welsh

'der Wels' and 'der Kelte' can be connected in a historical context, but they are not simply the same. 'Kelte' is the normal term for a member of the Celtic peoples. 'Wels' was an old term that Germanic peoples used for certain neighbors, at first also for Celts and later for Romance peoples. Today, 'Wels' is outdated in this meaning and can easily be misunderstood, because 'Wels' normally means a fish. In modern texts about history, 'Kelte' is usually clearer and more natural.
