King vs König

king

'der König' and 'der King' can both refer to a person with very high status. 'der König' is the normal German word for a male ruler in a monarchy. It can also be used figuratively for someone who is especially good in a particular field. 'der King' comes from English and usually sounds colloquial, modern, or connected to pop culture in German. You are more likely to say 'der King' when someone is seen as especially strong or cool within a group or scene. The words can be confused because both can mean 'the best'. For official rulers, however, 'der König' is more natural.
