Usage tips
Word family
'Der Kommentar' (the comment) is the noun that belongs to the verb 'kommentieren' (to comment). When someone comments on something, they write or say a comment.
EXAMPLE
Ich möchte diesen Beitrag nicht kommentieren.
I don't want to comment on this post.
Correct preposition
A comment always refers to a topic. For this, German uses the preposition 'zu' with the dative. You write a 'Kommentar zu' (comment on) something.
EXAMPLE
Haben Sie einen Kommentar zu den aktuellen Ereignissen?
Do you have a comment on the current events?
Context clues
The context makes the meaning clear: on the internet, it is about a remark (m01); in a newspaper, about an expression of opinion (m02); with a law, about a legal explanation (m03); and in a program, about a note for developers (m04).
EXAMPLE
Der Professor empfahl einen Kommentar zum neuen Gesetz.
The professor recommended a commentary on the new law.
Typical verbs
In connection with online discussions, verbs like 'einen Kommentar schreiben' (to write a comment), 'hinterlassen' (to leave), 'posten' (to post), or 'löschen' (to delete) are often used.
EXAMPLE
Der Administrator hat meinen Kommentar ohne Begründung gelöscht.
The administrator deleted my comment without giving a reason.

Kommentar vs Artikel
article
'der Artikel' and 'der Kommentar' can both be texts in a newspaper or on the internet, but they do not have the same focus. An article provides information about a topic and often explains facts or background. A comment or commentary contains more of an opinion, an evaluation, or a reaction. On the internet, a 'Kommentar' can also be a short reply under a post. Learners confuse the words because both can be written and public. Ask yourself: if it is mainly about information, 'Artikel' fits; if it is about an opinion or reaction, 'Kommentar' fits.
Kommentar
Wegen der schlechten Nachricht schreibt Paul einen kritischen Kommentar unter den Beitrag.
Because of the bad news, Paul writes a critical comment under the post.
Artikel
Vor der Reise sucht Anna einen Artikel über die neuen Regeln am Bahnhof.
Before the trip, Anna looks for an article about the new rules at the station.
