Usage tips

The word is made up of 'leiten' (to lead) and 'Artikel' (article). So it is a 'leitender Artikel' (leading article) that is meant to steer readers' opinions in a certain direction or present the editorial team's position.
EXAMPLE
Der Leitartikel gibt die Richtung der Zeitung vor.
The editorial sets the direction of the newspaper.
Editorial opinion
A Leitartikel (editorial) does not reflect the private opinion of an individual journalist, but the official position of the entire editorial team or publisher. That is why it is often found on one of the first pages.
EXAMPLE
Im Leitartikel positioniert sich die Zeitung klar gegen die geplante Gesetzesänderung.
In the editorial, the newspaper clearly positions itself against the planned change in the law.

Common verbs in connection with 'Leitartikel' (editorial) are 'einen Leitartikel schreiben' (to write an editorial), 'verfassen' (to compose/write), or 'lesen' (to read). People also often describe what 'im Leitartikel steht' (is written in the editorial).

Leitartikel vs Bericht
report
'der Bericht' and 'der Leitartikel' can both appear in newspapers or magazines, but they have different functions. A 'Bericht' mainly presents facts and observations objectively. A 'Leitartikel' shows the opinion or position of the editorial team on a current topic and is usually placed in an important section of the publication. Learners may confuse the words because both can be journalistic texts. Remember: a 'Bericht' informs in a more neutral way, while a 'Leitartikel' evaluates and aims to make readers think.

Im Leitartikel kritisiert die Zeitung die neue Entscheidung der Regierung.
In the editorial, the newspaper criticizes the government's new decision.
Bericht
Der Bericht nennt die wichtigsten Zahlen zur neuen Buslinie.
The report gives the most important figures about the new bus route.
