The German word 'der Konvent' can mean a political assembly. The English word 'convent' refers almost exclusively to a convent for nuns, which corresponds to only one of the meanings in German.

The meaning can be recognized easily from context. Words like 'Partei' (party), 'Delegierte' (delegates), or 'abstimmen' (to vote) point to a political assembly. Words like 'Kloster' (monastery/convent), 'Mönche' (monks), 'Nonnen' (nuns), or 'Abt' (abbot) point to the monastic community.

A political or organizational assembly is often referred to as a 'Konvent' (convention) that 'stattfindet' (takes place), 'abgehalten wird' (is held), or 'tagt' (is in session).

'Kloster' and 'Konvent' can both have to do with a community of monks or nuns. 'Kloster' usually means the place or buildings where this community lives. But it can also mean the community itself. In this context, 'Konvent' refers more to the community of members of a religious order, not primarily to the building. That is why the words can be confused when talking about religious life. A simple rule is: for the place, you usually say 'Kloster'; for the group of monks or nuns living there, 'Konvent' is more likely.
