The German word 'der Konvent' can mean a political assembly. The English word 'convent' refers almost exclusively to a convent for nuns, which corresponds to only one of the meanings in German.

monastery
Kloster can refer both to the religious community and to the complex of buildings where it lives. In this context, Konvent refers only to the community of monks or nuns. Kloster is therefore the appropriate word for the building; for the group living there, both words are possible.
