kurzweilig vs spannend
exciting
'spannend' and 'kurzweilig' can both be used positively to talk about something entertaining. 'spannend' emphasizes that you stay curious and want to know what happens next. 'kurzweilig' emphasizes that time passes pleasantly quickly and you are not bored. The words can be confused because an exciting evening is often also entertaining. But 'kurzweilig' does not have to be full of suspense; a funny lecture or a nice conversation can be 'kurzweilig' without being especially exciting.
kurzweilig
Der Abend auf der Feier war kurzweilig, weil wir viele lustige Gespräche hatten.
The evening at the party was entertaining because we had lots of funny conversations.
spannend
Mein Bruder liest gern spannende Bücher über echte Kriminalfälle.
My brother likes reading suspenseful books about real criminal cases.
