'unterhaltsam' is broader: something can be interesting, exciting, or pleasant without being very funny. A lecture, a film, or an evening can be 'unterhaltsam' even if you do not laugh much. Learners may confuse the words because both sound positive. If laughter is important, 'lustig' fits. If the time passes pleasantly, 'unterhaltsam' is often a better fit.
