'der Boden' and 'der Lehm' can both have to do with earth or soil. 'Boden' is the general term for the top layer of earth in which plants grow. 'Lehm' is a specific type of soil or earth material consisting of clay, sand, and silt. Loam can also be used as a building material. The words can be confused because loam can occur in soil. But not every kind of soil is loam. If you are speaking generally about earth in the garden, 'Boden' fits. If you mean the specific heavy, moldable type of soil, 'Lehm' is more precise.
