A treeless or only sparsely vegetated area within a forest, created through clearing or natural conditions.

forest edge
'der Waldrand' and 'die Lichtung' both have to do with places in or by the forest. The forest edge is the boundary of the forest, in other words the place where the forest ends and, for example, a meadow or a field begins. A clearing, by contrast, is inside the forest and is an open place without many trees. Learners may confuse the words because both places seem brighter and more open than dense forest. The difference is the location: 'Waldrand' is on the outside edge of the forest, while 'Lichtung' is inside the forest.
