'die Lichtung' and 'die Rodung' can both have to do with an open place in the forest. 'die Lichtung' mainly describes the place: an open area among trees. How it came into being is not always important. 'die Rodung' first refers to the action of removing trees and bushes. But it can also refer to the open area created by that process. That is why learners may confuse the words. If you only mean the open place in the forest, 'Lichtung' is usually more natural. If you want to emphasize that trees were removed, or that the process itself is involved, 'Rodung' fits better.
