'Machtkampf' is more specific: it is about who has more influence, control, or power. A power struggle can therefore be a 'Streit', but not every 'Streit' is a 'Machtkampf'. 'Machtkampf' fits especially in politics, work, or groups when someone wants to gain or keep a stronger position.
