The text of a book, article, or speech written by an author before it is printed and published. Nowadays, this is usually a computer file.

The word comes from Latin: 'manu scriptum' means 'written by hand.' This explains both meanings: the original text by an author (m01) and a historical handwritten document (m02).

'der Entwurf' and 'das Manuskript' can both refer to a text that has not yet been finally published. An 'Entwurf' is a preliminary version and may still be changed a lot. It can also belong to other things, not just texts. A 'Manuskript', on the other hand, is the text of a book, article, or speech written by an author. Learners may confuse the words when a text is not yet finished. For an early version, people often say 'Entwurf'; for an author's text before printing, 'Manuskript' fits better.
