The process by which a physical quantity such as length, temperature, or speed is determined with a measuring device.

The noun 'Messung' (measurement) is derived from the verb 'messen' (to measure). The ending '-ung' is used to form nouns from many verbs. These nouns are always feminine, so it is 'die Messung'.

To say what is being measured, you usually use the genitive or the preposition 'von' with the dative. The genitive is more formal than the construction with 'von'.

In the singular, 'Messung' (measurement) can mean both the process and the result. In the plural ('die Messungen'), it almost always refers to the results.

'der Wert' and 'die Messung' often go together when numbers are being determined. 'die Messung' is usually the process: for example, you measure temperature, blood pressure, or length. 'der Wert' is then the specific number that comes out of it. However, 'Messung' can also mean the result, so confusion can easily arise. If you are talking about the action, use 'Messung'. If you mean the number itself, 'Wert' is more precise.
