The process by which a physical quantity such as length, temperature, or speed is determined with a measuring device.
example
Die Messung der Luftqualität ergab erhöhte Feinstaubwerte.
The measurement of air quality showed elevated levels of particulate matter.
Usage tips
Word structure
The noun 'Messung' (measurement) is derived from the verb 'messen' (to measure). The ending '-ung' is used to form nouns from many verbs. These nouns are always feminine, so it is 'die Messung'.
EXAMPLE
Die Messung der Geschwindigkeit war sehr präzise.
The measurement of the speed was very precise.
Sentence structure
To say what is being measured, you usually use the genitive or the preposition 'von' with the dative. The genitive is more formal than the construction with 'von'.
EXAMPLE
Die Messung des Blutdrucks dauert nur eine Minute.
The measurement of blood pressure takes only a minute.
Context clue
In the singular, 'Messung' (measurement) can mean both the process and the result. In the plural ('die Messungen'), it almost always refers to the results.
EXAMPLE
Die erste Messung war fehlerhaft, also wiederholten wir sie.
The first measurement was faulty, so we repeated it.
Typical collocations
When it is about the process of measuring, the verb 'durchführen' (to carry out) or the more formal 'vornehmen' (to perform/carry out) is often used.
EXAMPLE
Ein Techniker führt die Messungen am Gerät durch.
A technician carries out the measurements on the device.

Messung vs Wert
value
'der Wert' and 'die Messung' often go together when numbers are being determined. 'die Messung' is usually the process: for example, you measure temperature, blood pressure, or length. 'der Wert' is then the specific number that comes out of it. However, 'Messung' can also mean the result, so confusion can easily arise. If you are talking about the action, use 'Messung'. If you mean the number itself, 'Wert' is more precise.
Messung
Vor dem Training macht die Trainerin eine kurze Messung des Pulses.
Before the training session, the trainer takes a quick measurement of the pulse.
Wert
Der Arzt prüft den Wert noch einmal, weil er ungewöhnlich hoch ist.
The doctor checks the value again because it is unusually high.
