The important difference is: in everyday language, 'das Datum' usually means a specific day in the calendar. 'das Metadatum' is information about other data, for example about a file: author, creation date, or file size. There is a risk of confusion because 'Datum' is also part of 'Metadatum', and the plural 'Daten' looks similar. For appointments and calendar days, you say 'Datum'. In technology, files, and databases, 'Metadatum' is more appropriate, usually in the plural 'Metadaten' (metadata).
