(derogatory) A loud, uncontrolled, and often aggressive crowd of people. The term is used to describe a group of people negatively as a chaotic bunch.

The context makes the meaning clear: If people are talking about dogs and hunting, it means a group of hunting dogs. If people are talking about humans, it means an uncontrolled, aggressive crowd.

When 'Meute' is used for people, it is always strongly derogatory and negative. It does not describe a neutral group, but rather a chaotic, threatening, or wild bunch.

For people, 'Meute' is often used in the form 'eine Meute von ...' (a mob of ...). Typical examples are 'eine Meute von Journalisten' (a mob of journalists), '... von Fans' (... of fans), or '... von Kindern' (... of children).

'die Menge' and 'die Meute' can both refer to a group of people. 'die Menge' is neutral and simply describes many people in one place. 'die Meute' is derogatory when used for people: it refers to a loud, chaotic, or aggressive group. So the word sounds clearly more negative. Learners may confuse the words because both occur with large groups. But 'Meute' should not be used neutrally if you just mean many people. For a normal gathering of people, 'Menge' is appropriate. 'Meute' only fits when the group really seems wild, loud, or threatening.
