mitlaufen vs laufen

to run

'laufen' and 'mitlaufen' can both describe movement or a running technical process. 'laufen' only says that someone is running/walking or that something is working. 'mitlaufen' additionally means that someone is running or walking together with others, or that something is active at the same time in the background. In a race, walk, or march, 'mitlaufen' is more natural when you mean participation in a group. In technical contexts, you say 'mitlaufen' when a program or recording is active in the background. The risk of confusion lies in the fact that both words contain 'laufen'; however, 'mit-' always shows being part of something or running alongside.
