upper level
'Oberstufe' and 'Mittelstufe' both describe a level in a school or course system. The difference is how high the level is. The 'Mittelstufe' comes before the Oberstufe and, in school, usually means the grades between elementary school and the upper school. In courses, it is an intermediate level. The 'Oberstufe' is later or more advanced, for example the final school years before the Abitur or a higher course level. The words can be confused because both sound like school sections or learning levels. Remember: 'mittel' is in the middle, while 'ober' is higher up or later.
