Usage tips
English origin
The word 'Mobbing' comes from the English verb 'to mob' (to crowd around, attack). In German, however, it has a very specific meaning and refers to systematic, repeated harassment over a longer period of time.
EXAMPLE
Er hat seine Arbeitsstelle wegen Mobbings durch Kollegen gekündigt.
He quit his job because of bullying by colleagues.
Typical contexts
'Mobbing' (bullying) is often used in specific social contexts. Common combinations are 'Mobbing am Arbeitsplatz' (workplace bullying), 'Mobbing in der Schule' (bullying at school), and increasingly also 'Cyber-Mobbing' (cyberbullying) for harassment on the internet.
EXAMPLE
Viele Schulen haben inzwischen Programme gegen Mobbing.
Many schools now have programs against bullying.
Typical verbs
To describe the victim's perspective, the phrases 'unter Mobbing leiden' (to suffer from bullying) or 'Opfer von Mobbing sein' (to be a victim of bullying) are often used. If you actively do something against it, you can say 'gegen Mobbing kämpfen' (to fight against bullying) or 'gegen Mobbing vorgehen' (to take action against bullying).
EXAMPLE
Sie leidet sehr unter dem Mobbing ihrer Mitschüler.
She suffers greatly from the bullying by her classmates.

Mobbing vs Diskriminierung
discrimination
'Diskriminierung' and 'Mobbing' can both mean that people are treated badly or excluded. The most important difference lies in the reason and the form. 'Diskriminierung' means disadvantage because of a characteristic such as origin, gender, religion, or age. 'Mobbing' means repeated harassment or exclusion of a specific person, often at school, at work, or online. The words can be confused because bullying can be discriminatory. But not all 'Mobbing' is 'Diskriminierung', and not all 'Diskriminierung' is 'Mobbing'.
Mobbing
Nach dem Gespräch mit den Eltern meldete die Schule das Mobbing in der Klasse.
After the conversation with the parents, the school reported the bullying in the class.
Diskriminierung
Lena findet es ungerecht, wenn Menschen wegen ihrer Religion Diskriminierung erleben.
Lena thinks it is unfair when people experience discrimination because of their religion.
