The word 'Mobbing' comes from the English verb 'to mob' (to crowd around, attack). In German, however, it has a very specific meaning and refers to systematic, repeated harassment over a longer period of time.

'Mobbing' (bullying) is often used in specific social contexts. Common combinations are 'Mobbing am Arbeitsplatz' (workplace bullying), 'Mobbing in der Schule' (bullying at school), and increasingly also 'Cyber-Mobbing' (cyberbullying) for harassment on the internet.

To describe the victim's perspective, the phrases 'unter Mobbing leiden' (to suffer from bullying) or 'Opfer von Mobbing sein' (to be a victim of bullying) are often used. If you actively do something against it, you can say 'gegen Mobbing kämpfen' (to fight against bullying) or 'gegen Mobbing vorgehen' (to take action against bullying).

Diskriminierung is unfair disadvantage or unequal treatment because of a characteristic such as someone’s origin. Mobbing, by contrast, refers to repeated personal attacks or exclusion. The two can occur together; what matters is the reason for the disadvantage or the systematic repetition.
Die Schülerin erlebt Mobbing, weil ihre Mitschüler sie jeden Tag beleidigen und ausgrenzen.
The student is experiencing bullying because her classmates insult and exclude her every day.
Die Schülerin erlebt Diskriminierung, weil sie wegen ihrer Herkunft nicht mitfahren darf.
