Word origin
The word 'Monat' (month) is closely related to 'der Mond' (the moon). Originally, the length of a month was based on the cycle of the moon, that is, the time from one new moon to the next.
EXAMPLE
Früher richtete sich der Kalender nach dem Mond und den Monaten.
In the past, the calendar was based on the moon and the months.
Important time prepositions
The prepositions used with 'Monat' (month) are important: 'vor einem Monat' (a month ago, past), 'in einem Monat' (in a month, future), and 'seit einem Monat' (for a month, duration continuing until now).
EXAMPLE
Vor einem Monat habe ich meinen neuen Job begonnen.
I started my new job a month ago.
Typical collocations
Common expressions for indicating points in time are 'Anfang/Mitte/Ende des Monats' (beginning/middle/end of the month). For regularity, German uses 'pro Monat' (per month) or 'im Monat' (a month/per month).
