Any floor of a building that is above the ground floor. It is also referred to as the first floor, second floor, and so on.

The word is made up of 'ober' (upper/above) and 'Geschoss' (floor/story). So it literally refers to the upper floor of a building.

To describe a position, use 'im Obergeschoss' (on the upper floor; dative). To express movement to that place, use 'ins Obergeschoss' (to the upper floor; accusative).

'der Stock' and 'das Obergeschoss' can both refer to part of a building. 'der Stock' is more general and is used especially when counting floors: 'erster Stock' (first floor), 'zweiter Stock' (second floor). Depending on the region, this can sometimes be confusing, because the 'erster Stock' is usually above the ground floor. 'das Obergeschoss' is more precise: it means a floor above the ground floor. If you want to say clearly that something is not on the ground floor, 'Obergeschoss' is often a better fit. If you mention a number, 'Stock' sounds more natural.
Im Obergeschoss gibt es zwei Schlafzimmer und ein kleines Bad.
