Usage tips
Compound nouns
'Parkettboden' is made up of 'Parkett' (parquet) and 'Boden' (floor). The second part identifies the object, while the first part specifies the type of flooring.
EXAMPLE
Unter dem alten Teppich haben wir einen schönen Parkettboden entdeckt.
Under the old carpet, we discovered a beautiful parquet floor.
Typical collocations
Typical collocations include 'einen Parkettboden verlegen' (to install a parquet floor), 'einen Parkettboden abschleifen' (to sand a parquet floor), and 'einen Parkettboden versiegeln' (to seal a parquet floor). These verbs are especially useful when talking about construction and renovation.
EXAMPLE
Bevor wir einziehen, lassen wir den Parkettboden abschleifen und versiegeln.
Before we move in, we'll have the parquet floor sanded and sealed.
Location and direction
When referring to objects on this surface, 'auf' (on) is commonly used: 'auf dem Parkettboden' with the dative describes the location. 'Auf den Parkettboden' with the accusative describes where something is being placed or set down.
EXAMPLE
Neben dem Sofa liegt ein kleiner Teppich auf dem Parkettboden.
There is a small rug on the parquet floor next to the sofa.
Wir legen einen kleinen Teppich auf den Parkettboden.
We're putting a small rug on the parquet floor.
