Usage tips
Food as the object
The food can appear directly as an accusative object. By contrast, 'nach' (at) followed by the dative describes what the bird is reaching for with its beak; whether it actually reaches it is left open.
EXAMPLE
Auf der Terrasse picken die Spatzen eifrig Brotkrümel.
The sparrows are busily pecking breadcrumbs on the terrace.
Das Huhn pickt nach einem Käfer.
The chicken pecks at a beetle.
'aus' with the dative
When you specify what something is being taken out of, use 'aus' (out of) with the dative. The thing being removed is in the accusative.
EXAMPLE
Er pickt die Glassplitter vorsichtig aus dem Teppich.
He carefully picks the shards of glass out of the carpet.
