'Pinnwand' is made up of 'Pinn-' and 'Wand' (wall). 'Pinn-' indicates that something is attached to the wall with a 'Pinnnadel' (pushpin).

When indicating movement toward the bulletin board, German usually uses 'an die Pinnwand' (to the bulletin board), while a fixed location takes 'an der Pinnwand' (on the bulletin board). This distinction is particularly clear with the verb 'hängen' (to hang): You hang something 'an die Pinnwand', and then it hangs 'an der Pinnwand'.
Bitte häng den Aushang an die Pinnwand.
Please hang the notice on the bulletin board.

Common expressions include 'etwas an die Pinnwand hängen' (to hang something on the bulletin board), 'etwas an die Pinnwand pinnen' (to pin something to the bulletin board), and 'etwas von der Pinnwand nehmen' (to take something off the bulletin board). A bulletin board is often used for information, appointments, or photos.
